Camille Le Saux
Isolation
March 2025
Ard Bia is delighted to welcome Camille Le Saux to the house.
Isolation is a photo exhibition that showcases an intimate look at the fishing huts of Connemara. Simple, resilient structures that blend seamlessly into the region’s wild landscapes.
Many of these huts are a part of the Ballynahinch Castle estate, and were built by Indian prince and cricket legend Ranjitsinhji after he purchased the property in 1924. They served multiple purposes for the estate’s fishing guides: providing storage for equipment, a place to observe lakes and rivers, shelter from the harsh weather, and sometimes, the warmth of a fireplace and a cup of tea. Some were also built by bailiffs more than a century ago, when Ireland was under British rule, and used as watchmen’s huts to prevent salmon poaching. A weathered sign still hangs in Ballynahinch Castle, where it says: “Poachers will be shot.”
Today, most of these huts are still used by local fishing guides, standing as quiet yet integral elements of the rugged beauty that defines this region. Captured over the past winter, this series of photographs explores their historical legacy, while evoking a sense of solitude and remoteness.
